You should touch the compound, making sure it is firm but pliable. Using a damp sponge, you should gently sand the area and create a smooth surface with the rest of the wall. 
  • One layer of joint compound isn’t enough. So, you should apply a second layer of joint compound. Even if you find the surface smooth, you should consider the second application. It’s important to make the coverage wide and smooth enough to blend in. Later, repeat the sanding step as well.
